Decimal Currency ...
It is nearly 42 years ago, that decimal currency was introduced into Australia. Prior to decimal currency, Australia's currency was based on the English monetary system of Pounds, Shillings and Pence. There were 12 Pennies in a Shilling and 20 Shillings made a Pound. When it was announced that 12 pennies would become 10 cents, there was outrage, as everyone thought they were losing 2 coins in value. It took a long, long time to convince the older population that they weren't, in fact, losing anything at all. The transition commenced on the 14th February 1966 and there were still many people who were confused by it all, even twelve months later. I was at high school at the time, and I can remember doing very well in the school tuck shop, due to the confusion of converting the old coins into the new. It wasn't enough to retire on, but I was able to buy accessories for my push bike as a result. |
