Early memories of TV ...
When Television was first introduced into Australia, there was only ONE TV Station, and it was only on-air from 3PM to 9PM daily. At all other times, all that appeared on the screen was what was called a TEST PATTERN. This Test Pattern was there for technicians to use to properly line-up the TV Antennae to get the best reception. It was only black and white but is was FANTASTIC! Some of the early series that I watched in awe, were The Cisco Kid, The Roy Rogers Show, The Mickey Mouse Club and Dragnet. Every now and then as a filler in between shows, (there were no such things as commercials then), they would play a piece out of American Bandstand, which showed the singers actually singing the songs they made famous. I distinctly remember the FIRST one that I ever saw. It was a song called FEVER sung by Miss Peggy Lee. I loved the song from the radio, and to see her performing it in my loungeroom on the TV, SPELLBINDING! This was the forerunner of the video hits shows that we see today. I still love to watch these shows and see the singer/band strut their stuff. It still amazes me. |
