English – the stupid language.
Linguists constantly proclaim that English is the hardest language to learn because of there being too many variables in pronunciation and word structure, etc. My teacher at school would always use the following example to demonstrate this fact to his class. He would go to the blackboard, pick up the chalk and would proceed to write … G H O T I No-one would know what this ‘word’ was and when he said that spelt FISH, the puzzled looks on the faces always brought a smile to his face. He would go on to explain as follows … In the word ENOUGH, the GH is pronounced as if it were an F sound. In the word WOMEN, the O is pronounced as if it were an I sound. In the word POSITION, the TI is pronounced as if it were a SH sound. Therefore, he concluded, he had just proved that G-H-O-T-I spells FISH. It was hard to argue with him when he explained it so well, and we all agreed that the English language was a crazy language to learn, but we did anyway. (we had to!)
