Flying the Flag ...
Today in Australia, the 26th January, we celebrate what we call Australia Day. It is our celebration of the existence of our wonderful country and reflect on how fortunate we are to be living in what we call the 'lucky country'. It is similar to Independence Day in America. There are awards given to prominent people who have contributed to Society in some way during the previous 12 months. I won't list the many recipients but they all richly deserve the recognition bestowed upon them. There are also ceremonies conducted all around the country, welcoming new Australian citizens. These are immigrants who have chosen to stay in our Country and take the Oath of Allegiance to uphold our laws, beliefs, customs and traditions, as if they were there own. Because the day fell on a weekend, (Saturday), the next following work day, (Monday), has been proclaimed a public holiday. The barbeques and parties start Saturday and go for three days as part of the huge celebration from coast to coast. People fly the flag from their car antenna's, attach them to their houses and wave them madly during the many parades that take place in every capital city and town throughout the land. Even the people in Far North Queensland which has recently been devastated by floods, pause to reflect on the Nation's birthday. They may not be feeling 'lucky' right now, but they know they will receive assistance and things will be good for them very soon. So, here I am, waving my flag and yelling out, "Happy Birthday Australia!" |
