Meeting the TV Stars ...
One of my all-time favorite shows on TV when we first were introduced to it in Australia in 1956, was by far, THE CISCO KID. It was a cowboy show and all the kids in my neighborhood would race home from school to my house, (we were the only family with a TV), and silently watch the action on the little screen. I was five years old at the time and The Cisco Kid was MY HERO! Two years later, it was advertised on the presenting TV channel, that they had arranged for the two stars of the show to visit Australia and they were COMING TO MY TOWN! When I heard that news, I jumped for joy. On the day that they arrived, my best friend and I cycled the 38 miles to the Airport and joined the crowd of about 150 people who had also come to meet them. We were all hushed as the plane door opened and out stepped DUNCAN RENALDO (Cisco) and LEO CARILLO (Pancho) dressed in their famous cowboy gear. It wasn't like the screaming frenzy you see these days with fans jostling and yelling and fainting, etc. As these two men walked down the stairs from the aeroplane and walked towards the waiting crowd, we all just started to clap our hands together, applauding their existence. I was lucky enough to get to shake their hands and to thank them for their great show. Did I get their autographs? It didn't even enter my mind to have them sign something as a momento. Hey, we had never experienced anything like this ever before. We had no idea of what to expect or what to do. We were all just so happy that we actually got to see our heroes up close and in person and that we had a chance to talk with them. It is a memory I will NEVER forget! |
