My father's spirit ...
Both of my children never had the pleasure of meeting or getting to know my father. Unfortunately, he had passed away before either of them were born. He knew of the impending arrival of my daughter, but died two months before she was born. He was just an average guy who had the ability to bring a smile to children's faces with the unusal facial expressions he would pull. I was extremely saddened by his passing and with the fact that his 'talents' wouldn't be shared or experienced by my children. During the first 3 years of my daughter's life, there were many times she would come running up to us appearing a little agitated. When asked what the problem was, she would always respond that 'goofy' was down there in her room. We deduced that she was referring to the Disney character that was on the front cover of a book she had in her room. One day, we were going through some old photographs that had been 'misplaced' for many years and had only been found when my mother had to be moved into a nursing home due to her poor health. As I held up an old faded picture of my father, my daughter, then aged 5, screamed out in excitement, "THERE'S GOOFY!" I was overwhelmed with joy when I realized that my father HAD managed to find a way to get to see his grand daughter, and that SHE had been able to SEE HIM and interact with him. I am crying now as I retell this here. The emotion experienced both then and now - OVERWHELMING! |
