Origin of the slang word - POM
As you may or may not know, many people refer to people from England as being POMS. There are many theories as to how this slang term originated, but I have the TRUE one. :o) Australia was the dumping ground for English prisoners, as their jails were overcrowded. Many of those imprisoned committed no greater crime than stealing a loaf of bread. I am digressing, sorry. Anyway, when these convicts were shipped out to Australia, they arrived wearing prison clothing. On the back of their prison uniform were the initials, P.O.H.M. which stood for, Prisoner Of Her Majesty. Hence, those around at the time referred to them as being POHMs which, over time, was shortened to POM's. This name has stuck around and, if used in a derogatory manner, can lead to some rather unpleasantness. It ISN'T a term of endearment, that's for sure! |
