SCAM emails ...
We have all had them. The emails offering you untold amounts of money if you will allow them to transfer the amassed funds of their recently assassinated loved one. They don't ask for much - just your full name, address and bank account details and a small amount of money to cover the paperwork. In return, you get rich! RIGGGGGGHT! OK - here's the REAL truth. Anyone who participates will: 1. Have their bank account cleaned out. 2. Have their identity stolen and used for illegal purposes. 3. Have their details onsold to other unscrupulous operators. All in all, not much fun. Here is the latest one that I recently received. ========================================================== FROM:MRS DEBORAH JOHNSON. PLOT 102 RUE 12 REVIERRA 111. ABIDJAN COTE D' IVOIRE. Dear one, It's my pleasure to contact you for a business venture which I and my Son Williams, intend to establish with you in your country. Though I have not met with you before but I believe, one has to risk confiding in someone to succeed sometimes in life. There is this huge amount of money "Twenty Six million U.S Dollars"($26,000,000.00) which my late Husband MR.JOHNSON YALE deposited for it's safely here in Abidjan for an investment Abroad, before he was assasinated by an unknow person. Now I and my son Williams decided to invest this money in your country or anywhere safe enough in Abroad where this is security, political and Economical Stability. We want you to help us to transfer this fund to your account in your country for a joint investment purposes on the followings below: 1). HOSPITALS. 2). REAL ESTATE. 3). FIVE STAR HOTEL. If you can be of an assistance to us, we will be pleased to offer you 20% Of the total fund. I wait for your Urgent response. Extend my warmest regards to you and your entire family. Thank you and God bless you. Yours Sincerely, Mrs Deborah Johnson, For the Family. ========================================================== I replied from a secondary email address and gave them a P O Box to send the check to. I told them that banks were untrustworthy in my Country and I would definitely use the money to invest as they had stated. I did it for fun. I guess they figured that cos I am still waiting for the check to arrive. *smiles* Others who write and say they will give me 1 million dollars if I will cover the cost of the transfer which is normally around $2,500.00(?), I write back and tell them I would be happy if they would deduct the $2,500.00 from the $1 million and send me the difference. Still waiting! Sadly, there ARE people who fall for these emails and respond, giving ALL of the requested details. I personally know of one Company Accountant, currently doing a stretch in prison for white collar crime. He transferred Company Funds to a Nigerian bank on the promise that they would invest it wisely in a new Mining Venture and send him monthly payments as the profits came in. He figured that he could repay the Company for the initial investment pretty quickly and pocket the rest before anyone found out. He didn't see one red cent, of course, and was left to explain the deficit in the Company's bank statements. The judge gave him 7 years to ponder his stupidity. Live and learn.
