The FIRST NERD!?

When I was growing up, my next door neighbor had a 20 year old staying with them. His name was Brian and he was about 6 foot 6 inches tall, lanky, covered in acne and spoke with a drawl.

He was, to us little kids, a bit of a weirdo. He would always carry a large black box around with him and, if anyone approached him, he would clutch it to his chest as if protecting it.

We often speculated that the box contained money and, even though he was older and bigger than we were, we would tease him relentlessly, wanting him to tell us what he had in the box. He never did, and we found out later that what he had in that box, was PRICELESS!

One day, in our letterbox, we received a flyer telling us of a free movie screening at our local Scout Hall. Now free movies weren't something to be passed up, so parents and kids from far and wide showed up at the Scout Hall on the nominated day. Even Brian was there.

The doors to the Scout Hall opened and we all packed in, sitting where we could. At the back of the hall, on a tressle table, sat the projector. Next to the projector was a black box and next to the black box - was BRIAN!

He opened the box and everyone's eyes were glued to his EVERY move. Inside the black box, the box that we had been wanting to learn the mystery of for ever, were cans of film. Brian would carefully take out each can, remove the lid, load the film onto the projector, thread it and start it in motion.

ALL the films were starring Charlie Chaplin, a character we all loved. Somehow, Brian had managed to get ahold of EVERY known piece of Charlie Chaplin film, be it in good order or not. He had painstakingly cut and spliced bits and pieces of some damaged film together to make it presentable. It didn't matter to those in attendance. This was entertainment at it's BEST!

I don't know whatever happened to Brian and his collection. He moved away not long after the screening and I never saw him again.

Equating things to today's pidgeon-holing of people, he definitely qualified as being a NERD, albeit a FILM NERD.
